I'm using php highlighting, but I assume that it can be in others too:
If you have an escaped double quote in a string with double quotes (e.g. "\"") than \
the syntax highlighting is confused because it thinks that from this point on there \
is a new string opened and not closed anymore. Thus having the whole code highlighted \
as string.
