It's really a debian packaging bug I think, more than a Kate bug, but who knows.  The \
problem is, every time Kate is updated, all custom configuration is lost.  I.e., \
fonts go back to default size (way too small), and one nasty default - automatic \
white space cleanup - rears it's head again (this one is nasty for work on the kernel \
as it results in large number of bogus whitespace diffs - arguably the default should \
be changed).  Thanks for taking the time to review this, and thanks for the fine work \
you've all done on this editor, to date.
