OS/Compiler notes: 

this is a very disturbing bug, since it makes you scared to use kate in KDE 3.0.  it doesn't happen \
always, and i can't seem to find out exactly what conditions are necessary, but kate crashes with as \
segfault quite often upon doing a "save" or "save as".  there is no backtrace available.

i would be VERY pleased with a workaround, if one is available.
