Well, the current kate (cvs HEAD) has the following behaviour:
select some text
press CTRL + F, the search dialog pops up with the selected text in the find 
entry
press RETURN to find the first occurrence (according to dialog settings, 
defaults to "from cursor")
Press F3 to "find next" or SHIFT + F3 to "find previous"
