Start Kate, use "Save as". The top combo box will show "Root directory: /" but it's \
not the contents of the root directory that's actually displayed below (but the \
current directory).

Also, if you place the cursor behind "Root directory: /" and just press return you \
end up in your home directory.

This does not happen with other KDE software that uses the file dialog.
