I'm not sure that I understand exactly what you mean. Kate tries to check if 
a file is newer on disk when the file is focused (becomes the current edited 
file), and I (who added the feature) has noted that sometimes if that happens 
with the same file several times within a session, I sometimes gets a crash. 
I would be happy for more information, if this is not the same situation.
