I deliberately kept it out of compile space by not including the new
folder in Makefile.am (and thus out of "make dist" created tarballs
etc.) but am more than happy to move it to a branch if this is more
appropriate....

I do not know however which path to use for the branch... if you could
recommend the location, I will branch and tidy up trunk if you think
it's better that way?
