The good thing about the changes I propse is that if the host 
application doesn't support it, the plugin can either simply not work, 
or regress to a more manual functionality.

At the moment for example, the gallery plugin is basically a separate 
application with a little bit of a UI to help pick imags from the host 
applications lists. This interface can be kept, but a more advanced 
interface can allow for proper syncing.

So the changes I propose would indeed be optional. :)

Out of curiosity, who is the one to decide. Being new to this dev group, 
I'm not really clear on who's who yet :)
