Grz,
me

>
>
> *KDE Community launches Plasma Workspaces 4.5*
>
> *1. Introduction*
> KDE, an international Free Software community, is happy to announce the
> immediate availability of the Plasma Workspaces version 4.5. The Plasma
> Workspace sees both polish in existing window management tasks as well
> as innovation in textending itself further towards a more semantic,
> task-driven workflow.
>
> * Plasma Workspace Activities: the Zooming User \
Interface
> (ZUI) of the previous Plasma Workspace releases has been \
replaced
> by an “Activity Manager”, similar to the Add Widgets \
dialog
> introduced with the 4.4 release. The concept of an Activity \
has
> also been extended and improved. Activities are now easier to
> manage and can aid users in their daily computing needs, providing
> them with a clearer separation between their different tasks.
> This use of activities have been integrated with Nepomuk support.
>
> * The notification area (the “i” icon next to the \
system
> tray) is now a separate widget and can be placed anywhere in \
the
> workspace, freeing it from the confines of the system tray. \
The
> tracking of downloads and similar operations has been improved \
by
> providing a visual progress indication in the widget itself.
> Likewise, the display of notifications and the system tray has
> been substantially improved, in both aesthetics and functionality,
> including a new monochrome icon display. The Device Notifier also
> now shows errors directly to users.
>
> * KWin, the window manager component of the Plasma \
Workspace,
> can now manage windows through tiling algorithms. Enabling \
this
> allows the window manager to take care of placing windows for \
the
> user following a defined set of rules. KWin also features
> increased graphical effects and improved performance.
>
> * Plasma Netbook, the KDE Workspace for small notebooks \
and
> netbooks, has also received substantial improvements with this
> release. Many of the changes are not immediately visible, but
> should provide a more pleasant netbook experience with smoother
> animations and better touchscreen capabilities.
>
>
> A variety of other improvements includes changes to KRunner’s display of
> results, configurable panel icon sizes, panel javascript templates and
> shadows, better drag and drop in the Quick Launch widget (including
> multi column/row layouts), improvements in Dolphin, Konsole, and much
> more. It has also been made possible to start Plasma applets as separate
> applications.
the KDE family.
> The game Konquest, in which the player is supposed to \
conquer the
> galaxy, now lets users create and customize their own \
maps. Other
> improvents are easier configuration in Palapeli, a new \
KGoldRunner
> level set (“Demolition”), and better SGF file integration \
for Kigo.
>
> * The educational applications have also seen several
> improvements. The biggest were for the learning aid, Parley, which
> has gained a new practice interface and support for conjugations.
>
> * Marble, our virtual globe application, received a \
route
> planning feature and the option to download map data before you \
go
> on a trip so you don’t need access to internet to make use of \
it.
> Read the virtual changelog for Marble <a href="*TO BE
> ADDED*">here.
>
> * The new “oxygen-settings” tool allows power users to configure the
> default Oxygen style to their liking. Moreover, in a move to
> support Free Software around the world, all KDE applications now
> can work with the Thai, Taiwanese and Japanese calendars, and
> there are more digit sets supported. Finally, the theme engine
> Aurorae has seen many improvemnts and the blur effect has been
> reintroduced but may be disabled until further optimisations are
> done.
>
>
> Smaller details also include support for automatically updating adblock
> lists in Konqueror and the optional use of the WebKit rendering engine,
> and Gwenview no longer blocks the UI on heavy image operations like
> applying effects and editing no longer loses your EXIF metadata.
> Gwenview also sees many usability improvements and increased
> configurability. Finally, KInfoCenter, which gives the user an overview
> of the hardware and software configuration of his or her system, has
> seen some major work this release. Stability is now better and the main
> window has been re-arranged to make it easier to find what you are
> looking for.
>
> *KDE PIM delayed*
>
> This release of the KDE Applications does not contain the latest KDE
> Personal Information Management applications. The KDE PIM team has
> decided to delay the release of their applications for one or two months
> to ensure complete stability. The move of several of these applications
> to the new Akonadi infrastructure (introduced in the previous 4.4
> release) is a complicated matter. While it is exciting to see this move
> and to finally be able to take full advantage of the new technology, the
> KDE PIM team wants to ensure the integrity of the users data and make it
> easy to migrate. You can read more about this migration *KDE Community Announces **KDE** Platform 4.5*
>
> *1. Introduction*
> KDE, an international Free Software community, proudly announces the
> release of the KDE Platform 4.5. This foundation for the Plasma
> Workspaces and the Applications developed by KDE has seen significant
> improvements in many areas. Besides the introduction of new technology,
> a lot of work has been spent on improving the performance and stability
> of the underlying pillars of KDE development. KDE Platform has
> progressed in many areas, both in terms of infrastructure and of
> development tools.
>
> * After years of work, the WebKit KPart has become part \
of
> our libraries, offering users the choice between the WebKit
> rendering engine and its predecessor, KHTML. WebKit now provides a
> much improved integration in Konqueror, the KDE web browser, and
> other appliations making use of the web capabilities of the KDE
> libraries.
>
> * Plasma Desktop can now be configured by JavaScript
> templates which can be distributed as small Plasma packages. This
> makes it possible for system administrators to easily set up
> custom Plasma configurations for users.
>
> * Application developers making use of Kate’s SmartRange
> interface now have several new interfaces to use, of which \
the
> details can be found in
> href="<a href="http://kate-editor.org/2010/07/13/kde-4-5-smartrange-movingrange/" \
target="_blank">http://kate-editor.org/2010/07/13/kde-4-5-smartrange-movingrange/">this
> blogpost.
>
> * As the KDE Applications welcome their first full Python-written
> application, the KDE bindings developers have added Perl bindings
> to the officially supported language set. Ruby support in the KDE
> Platform has also been
> href="<a href="http://www.arnorehn.de/blog/2010/07/and-the-bindings-keep-rocking-writing-ruby-kio-slaves/" \
target="_blank">http://www.arnorehn.de/blog/2010/07/and-the-bindings-keep-rocking-writing-ruby-kio-slaves/">significantly
> improved.
>
> * The KDE Platform introduces new Perl bindings to \
allow
> application developers to use more languages that they are
> comfortable with when developing with KDE.
>
>
> Kdelibs also sees many improvements to its kdewebkit and webkitpart
> functionalities, and support for XPath in KHTML has been introduced.
> Finally, the sharing functionality of Plasma widgets now allows
> notifications to be received from remote locations as well as the local
> computer.
