Infatti (assumendo che il software di cui parliamo sia rilasciato sotto 
GPL), sia la GPL v2 che v3, sotto "TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR COPYING, 
DISTRIBUTION AND MODIFICATION", dicono chiaramente (2a):

a)  You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices stating 
that you changed the files and the date of any change.
