The problem goes deeper than this. It is *NOT* simply sufficient to set up 
this locale information in the Control Center -- this only works for 
displaying, currency info etc.

The real problem here, as Tamas mentioned, is that X Window *need* this 
information (LC_* or LANG variable) *before* it starts. Otherwise you're not 
able to enter the "special" characters.
