Thanks for the hint Yuri.

But this seems to be easier (no conversion necessary):

1) Go to http://userbase.kde.org/KMail/FAQs_Hints_and_Tips
2) Click Translate this page or select your language + click "translated 
version"
3) Select "Export translations for off-line translation" + Your Language
4) Press "Fetch" and save the po file
