Well, I was a bit unclear here.
Since the original just puts some common abbreviations into the messages.
It is not possible to translate these. So we can just do as the original;
think of common abbreviations in our language. These do not have a real
connection to the original string. If now the author changes one of the
original abbreviations, there is a fuzzy, but since the original and the
translation have no real connection, the fuzzy is invalid.
This is not a major issue though.

Taking my former example with the square feet. In German we do not have
common abbreviations for this, so I have to do something like:

msgid "square foot"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "square feet"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "ft ²"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "square ft"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "sq foot"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "sq ft"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "sq feet"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
msgid "feet ²"
msgstr "Quadratfuß"
