This may be of interest to some on the list.
Kevin Scannell, who is on the Irish KDE team, is a specialist in natural
language processing, and has written a grammar-checking engine called
Gramadóir (http://borel.slu.edu/gramadoir). Ports of this to various
languages are in progress, one of them being Welsh.
I have just finished a web-interface to this, called Klebran ("clebran" means
"prattle" in Welsh) - http://www.klebran.org.uk. This flags up grammatical
errors in different colours, checks spelling and offers alternatives, and
gives meanings and part-of-speech info for all known words (by using Eurfa,
the free dictionary for Welsh).
It is by no means perfect, but is the first ever free (GPL) grammar-checker in
Welsh, so it is an important addition to the lexical toolset for free
software users in Wales.
I would urge everyone, and especially those involved with minority languages,
where resources may be scarce, to consider porting Gramadóir to your language
if equivalent tools do not already exist. It is a versatile engine, and will
be able to be used as a plugin for the Elixir grammar-checking backend to the
new Sonnet language framework being developed by Jacob Rideout for KDE4
(http://blog.jacobrideout.net).
