well, on x86_64, where msgsmerge-0.14.5 ate 150Mb of ram while merging
two 8.4Mb catalogs, the patched one now eats nearly 900Mb before
triggering OOM (i've only 512Mb of ram of which a part is taken by the
the graphic card and around 415Mb for a total of 882Mb availlable to
userspace)

i'ven't tested ia32 though.
