a 'user' can update his translations by putting the mo-files in 
$KDEHOME/share/locale/language/LC_MESSAGES

I instructed the catalog manager to do so while compilating po-files:

msgfmt -o /home/rinse/.kde/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES/@PACKAGE@.mo 
@PACKAGE@.po
