I think you wanted to say `live CD based on Knoppix'.

FYI, Knoppix itself is based on Debian.  It will be a bad idea to call
your CD  Knoppix, because Knoppix is  a name owned  by somebody called
Knopper. I'm not sure if Knopper holds a trademark. 

All the same, so long as you do not call your CD `knoppix', there will
not be any problem.

Have you enabled UTF-8 in the kernel? Is the nls_utf8 module loaded?

Do a `modprobe nls_utf8 -v' as root.
