Hi everyone,

I think that it is every important to have KDE translated into more
languages. Having a free desktop available in a language where Redmond didn't
translate their stuff, is a big competitive advantage for Linux and for KDE.

And (much more important) it helps all these peoples with their languages to
preserve their culture in a 
globalized world.

Translation of KDE should be easier. Therefore I propose

1) to have a list of missing languages (e.g. on i18n.kde.org) so that we can
assess the amount of work that still 
needs to be done, together with information about these languages:
* number of speakers
* main countries where this language is spoken
* ideas where to find people who are willing to start such a project
Team formation is difficult. I saw this in 
=> Low Saxon (where it took some time, but we made it)
=> Frisian (which never really took off)
=> Maori (which was started, but was abandoned soon afterwords)

We should know what is missing. And we should help in team formation. We
could e.g. use dot.kde.org to make calls for certain languages.

We could also add languages to the list that have difficulties with their
translations, because they do not have enough people to take care about the
translation. I think that many potential translators of smaller languages still
do not know that this is a way even non-programmers can assist in improving
KDE.

2) we should have a closer look at the texts that need to be translates (the
po-files). They have quite a number of strange things in it that make
translations difficult. So I think it would be good to have a comprehensive
vocabulary that we need for KDE. And we should have some kind of automatic checking
of PO-files, whether they use this vocabulary and report everything extra. So
that we can then
=> extend the list of "approved terms" or exclude certain po-files from this
check or
=> contact the authors and ask them to find a better way to express what
they mean.
