It did, indeed. cvs log desktop_kdebase.pot shows:
 > revision 1.364
 > date: 2004/01/28 22:45:38;  author: scripty;  state: Exp;  lines: +9 
-5849
 > CVS_SILENT made messages
 > ----------------------------
 > revision 1.363

And it did so for HEAD too.

The good news about it is that this makes adding new languages to KDE a 
lot easier. Breaking the 80%-barrier for translating desktop_kdebase.pot 
into Low Saxon was hard work indeed. :)

Which still does not answer the question how this happened...
