For example: If your using KBabel for proofreading, go to "Settings->Configure KBabel->Save" and set the charset to utf-8 If youre using kate go to "Settings->Configure editor->fonts" And set the charset to utf-8. (afaik utf8 is the same as iso10646-1, but i'm not sure of that.)
