In SuSE 7.3 I don't find any difficulties. Just set the charset to 
iso-8859-15 is enough to display the ¤, even AA of TTF-fonts is not really 
needed .
But the keyboard is a bit more tricky. For some reason ~/.Xmodmap is 
overruled everytime the computer starts. this can be solved by putting 
something like 
xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap in for example Autostart.
