Gramatically, the comma should be there, because you want a pause there.
Having the "and" without the comma is wrong.

However, it is somewhat OK to do:

	"Alice, bob, foo1, foo2 are typing"

.. and omit the and as well as the comma. This is what Kopete is doing now.
 There is no "and". I think this was done to ease the translation.
