It seems it crashes only once per login session - for my tests I had to 
reboot everytime, else all following program starts led to a correct 
result(!). Restarting X+KDE alone didn't affect this behaviour.

So this is REALLY strange (and reproducible).

Here's my backtrace:

Please try the latest qcanvas from TrollTech (via rsync://), they have 
changed quite a bit, for example QCanvas::drawArea is now a wrapper for 
drawCanvasArea, as opposed to the current one in KDE's CVS (qt-copy).
If this doesn't help, send 'em a bug report.
