To be honest, I don't think it's ideal saying you're just doing it to
get the GSoC project...

A good way to get started, besides getting in touch with the
developers, is finding an issue to fix and fix it yourself. You can
find cantor's and any KDE project over here:
https://bugs.kde.org/
