Ah, maybe this is what made me "feel" that there is 
something wrong with the spacing/kerning between the
letters 'E' and 'd'? 

But then the special shape of the lowest bar of 'E' makes
it hard to shift the 'e'further to the left - unless
you move it up a bit.

For versions to come and other succeedors:
I could imagine that another logo could make use of the
fact that KDE is EDK backwards - nearly EDU - so some
mirroring effects could be used here.

This is not meant as criticism, just some brain storming... ;)
