Hi Jeffrey,

welcome to the list! Your project sounds very interesting. 
Do you plan to make your formulas be rendered graphically?
There might be some libraries to display TeX-formulas propperly in Qt.

Do you know wxmaxima [1] or mathGUIde? Those are graphical frontends for 
computer algebra systems.
