I think they don't care about whether their catalogs are distributed
as "proprietary" or "GPL" or whatever, but whether people charge money
for it ( "commercial" software ).  The GPL perfectly allows people to
do this, and a lot of companies do so.  Thus, I don't think that them
saying that it's fine to use the catalogs for non-commercial purposes
( "As long as Kstars itself remains free" ), but I think the only
valid option is to get them to explicitly give you ( and/or other
people ) a GPL-compatible license to the catalogs, or to find another
catalog that is available in the public domain or under a
GPL-compatible license.
