I think the system is very frustrating because it is too complex to
understand by just reading some tutorials. So a good starting point is
gnu.org and reading the pages for autoconf and automake.

Don't forget KDevelop. I only use it to create the Makefile.am and
configure.in files for me and after that I leave it behind and just use vim.

You can save a lot of time if you don't try to understand autoconf/make
system at all ;-)))
