Oh, ok. I have to say I am not a automake/autoconf expert. But maybe you can 
look at the Makefile.am

There you should find a line like:

ktopo_SOURCES = ...

Maybe the tar.gz are also listed in that line. If so remove them and do:

make clean
autoconf
automake
sh configure
make
make dist

And yes, please do a backup first ;-) If this doesn't help, I can't help :-(
