You could use QDom classes. They make handling XML quite easy IMHO.

You applications data directory.
you can use the locate function from kstddirs.h to get a path to that 
diretory independend of the users settings.
like
QString filename = locate("app", "image1.xml");
which would on my system return .kde2/share/apps/reKord/image1.xml
