Hi all,
I like to equip a system, working as a controller of some industrial
hardware, with a KDE 2.2 desktop. The main purpose of this controller is to
run a single QT 2.x application, so I need only basic desktop functionality,
some utilities (printing, process manager, a small editor) and a html browser.
Unfortunately the controller is a 'lame duck' and it is not possible to
exchange it by better hardware. While the startup performance of the
application is ok, I would like to improve the startup of the desktop. My
idea was stripping KDE down to the reduced, well known requirements of the
controller. I was thinking about leaving out all multimedia stuff and maybe
all html code, using konqueror with the gecko engine only. (I guess there are
several other canditates, I'm not aware of ?)
I had a look at the configure script in kdelibs and kdebase, but the options
seem to let me control, if to include several 3-party libraries, but not to
select what KDE features to use. So what is my best way to go ?
I guess I'm not the only one who would like to build some lightweight
desktop. Wouldn't it be nice to have some appropriate configure options ?
Cheers,
Uwe
