I followed the howto at http://www.research.att.com/~leonb/objprelink/howto.html

pretty much to the letter.  The only difference was my configure line
for qt which is:

 -gif -system-zlib -system-libpng -system-jpeg -system-libmng -sm -xft \
-no-g++-exceptions -no-opengl -thread
