All of the "transparent" stuff I've seen (with the exception of stuff using 
the X RENDER extension) are just hacks. They take a snapshot of the screen 
below, and draw on top of that. It's not really good for anything but 
backgrounds, because it doesn't update when the windows behind it are updated.
