i've done a little poking around, and i've discovered a little more,
at least insofar as xplanet is concerned:
it is set to update every 60 minutes, and the program *does* seem to
run every 60 minutes, in that the xplanet.jpg file in my ~ gets
updated hourly -- i've been checking. but whatever is supposed to
transport it to the screen fails to do so. so the apparent problem is
not in the code that tells xplanet to execute, but in whatever it is
that lets the new picture in when the old one is overwritten.
is this at all useful? any notions as to how a user might adjust
anything to fix it? as noted earlier, all was well until very recent
code.
