Hmm.. but configure checks for libxml2 >=2.3.9 

% rpm -q libxml2 libxml2-devel
libxml2-2.3.9-1mdk
libxml2-devel-2.3.9-1mdk
.
Why is mine too old? Configure didn't complain, either.
