thanks. i did delete the [dock_configuration] section in knoderc and 
it didn't help; *then* i deleted that section in the knoderc that 
actually is used, as opposed to the one left around from the new 
operating system install, and this time it worked.<g>

amazing how editing the *correct* file was more effective.
