OK I ran some tests and then looked in /var/log/daemon.log TEST 1 - kdm in /etc/inittab with the -debug 255 -daemon options X Screen came up (in grey) but no greeter, eventually when I killed X=20 (ctrl-alt-bksp) and did a pstree I had a kdm with a kdm-config as a child= and=20 3 other kdm-configs left on their own. /var/run/xdm.pid was created (and= I=20 had to manually remove it after killing kdm) Some key bits of the log (seems to restart kdm-config just after starting= X) ------ start log snippet Jun 17 08:35:09 kanger kdm[14360]: Sending int 255 (0xff) to helper Jun 17 08:35:09 kanger kdm[14363]: execute: /usr/bin/kdm_config -nodaemon= ;=20 CONINFO=3D3 6 Jun 17 08:35:09 kanger kdm[14360]: Started helper /usr/bin/kdm_config, pi= d=20 14363 =2E.. un 17 08:35:10 kanger kdm[14360]: StartServer for :0 Jun 17 08:35:10 kanger kdm[14367]: Exec '/usr/bin/X11/X' 'vt7' '-auth'=20 '/var/lib/kdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-4buYCQ' Jun 17 08:35:11 kanger kdm[14368]: Sending int 255 (0xff) to helper Jun 17 08:35:11 kanger kdm[14371]: execute: /usr/bin/kdm_config -nodaemon= ;=20 CONINFO=3D3 6 Jun 17 08:35:11 kanger kdm[14368]: Started helper /usr/bin/kdm_config, pi= d=20 14371 =2E..
