If it linked, the variable was indeed defined somewhere, so the code in
question does something with a portion of memory.  On solaris environv is
a "char **environ;" where each environ[i] contains a string of the form
"A=B".  Already present entries can be overwritten by self-defined
strings.  The last entry is marked by being 0.
