Kaboodle is a simple media player, designed for single-shot playing, and 
Konqueror embedding, currently in kdenonbeta.  Kaboodle can play anything 
Noatun can.

There are several people who'd be happy to help you learn, I think.  
Especially if you'd be interested in writing, say, a libmpeg3 ( 
http://heroines.sourceforge.net/libmpeg3.php3 ) playobject.

And anyway, any little bit of help you can give will be useful, so don't 
worry if you can't do a lot right away.
