Subject: Bug#25855: system freezes on startup
Package: kdm
Version: KDE 2.1.1
Severity: normal
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified
Hi,
This seems similar to bugs #22480 and #21123, but I'm filing it separately \
as the error logs I get are completely different.
(1). If I log on as a user, I get as far as "Initializing system services" \
and get a freeze, forcing a reset.
(2). Logging on as root sometimes freezes at "Initialising peripherals" \
also requiring a reset.
(3). Sometimes the startup only gets as far as the X-default background \
(grey cross-hatching) and then freezes - once again, the only way out is a \
reset.
This is .xsession-errors from my user account after (1)...

I've truncated the file, there're lots more "QBuffer out of range" lines.
The root .xsession-errors looks like this after freezes (2) and (3) in that \
order (are logs written incrementally?)...

Other relevant information.
This started after an upgrade from Redhat 7.0 -> 7.1, which includes KDE \
and XFree86 upgrades (kernel 2.4.2-2, XFree86 4.0.3-5, glibc 2.2.2-10, \
kdelibs 2.1.2-1, kdebase 2.1.2-1).
I've changed /etc/X11/prefdm to use kdm rather than gdm.
I don't get these problems using gnome, though I do get (apparently) random \
freezes after login.
I'm using a Dell Optiplex GX1 (i686) and the user account is on a remote \
disk.
Hope you can help, I've had to fall back on my MS-Windows partition. If you \
need anymore information, just tell me what and how to get it. Thanks in \
advance,
John
