CFLAGS="-O2 -mpentiumpro -pipe" CXXFLAGS=$CFLAGS ./configure --with-pic \
--disable-debug --enable-final --whatever-else-you-need

Note: Using your own C(XX)FLAGS is not officially supported and the
      benefit is usually small.

Note: If you disable debug symbols, you won't be able to make a proper bug
      report if a program crashes.
