It's a problem by design, AFAIK. You've run into KDE's points vs pixels issue.
Even though bitmap fonts still rule the Linux/Unix world, KDE tries to rescale
the fonts to make them keep their point size, regardless of screen resolution.
The problem is that it's not what most users expect and more importantly very
often results in "badly drawn" fonts.

I've suggested many times that KDE should go back to font sizes based on pixel
sizes, at least until the compabilities issues are solved (with dialogs,
borders, etc.) and until high quality outlined fonts are common in Unix/Linux.
The idea is not bad, per se.

And, if I'm not mistaken, the move from pixels to points was mostly due to one
coder's conviction and not necessarily the will of the majority. I could be
wrong here, of course.

Problems like these can easily be forgotten, because you probably only change
the screen resolution once. But nevertheless it's something every new user will
experience, and quite likely early on while they're still evaluating KDE.
