I didn't time the 'old' version, but..

Celeron 300a, 128MB RAM, 64MB swap on separate drive(SCSI), 20 GB Maxtor
DMA2, Abit BH6

~/cvs/kdebase$ time make -f Makefile.cvs
...
...
real    3m29.275s
user    2m26.560s
sys     0m13.510s

Still a few minutes, but definitely 'feels' faster than before.
