Hello everybody,
here is my first message on the kde-devel mailing list and I hope there're=
will be others more helpfull for you than this one where I'm just begging=
for some advice =21
The reason I'm here is because I attended the KDE conferences at the Linux=
expo in Paris. They were 2 conferences : one from David Faure and another=
one from Gerard Delafond (who presented the translation project). I found=
them both well done and was actually impressed by the good organisation o=
f this project. It was really interesting to talk to the KDE people. I fin=
ally decided I could somehow contribute since I like C/C++ programing.
I need to get into it first before I can help in any manner :
I downloaded the sources of kde2.1 beta 2 and try to install it on a suse =
7.0.
My first question is :
is there a way to install it in a different directory than /opt/kde ? I ha=
d already the kde1.x installed with suse7.0 and it makes kind of a mess wi=
th the =22make install=22 which puts every in /opt/kde also. I wrote a scr=
ipt to change all /opt/kde of all Makefiles but I guess there's more to it=
since it doesn't do a great job.
Second question : =
I then removed my suse packages of kde and install the kde2.1B2. It works =
fine beside the fact that my kdm is kinda sick (not well configured). I ed=
ited the kdmrc but it doesn't take it into account. Is this config file st=
ill valid for this version ?
Third question :
I had never used automake and autoconf before. It's not clear to me where =
this acinclude.m4 comes from =21 It's in every AC=5FINT so I guess this fi=
le is generic for all KDE application ? Am I right ?
The reason I'm wondering that is because I started writing small applicati=
on to get some practice w/ KDE API and I don't want to use Kdevelop. But h=
old on ... don't understant me wrong, Kdevelop is for sure a great tool bu=
t I'd rather keep using my good old Xemacs w/ Makefiles which allows me to=
understand better the way things work.
Is there somewhere a template since all applications seems to be based on =
automake and autoconf.
I guess that's it for now. I go back to my KDE config and programing ;-). =
It would save me precious time though if someone was willing to give me a =
hand.
If these questions are too basic for this mailing list : don't hesitate to=
let me know.
Since I'm starting with KDE programming, there might be other mailing list=
for that ?
Thanks a lot
Bruno
