This also happens to me.  I've built qt with the xft patch (after upgrading 
to XFree86 4.0.2), only to find out that my video card driver does not 
support the render extention.

Anyway, I am almost positive it is an X bug, and has nothing to do with kde.  
I can reproduce it with blackbox and mozilla.  (my.monster.com will kill X in 
mozilla and konqueror.  ns 4.7 doesn't kill it.)

I had just assumed it was because of the nvidia driver I was using.
