You can still use your old fonts, you just have to edit the
XftConfig file. For example, I have

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype"
  
at the beginning of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XftConfig
