| Although I use the source RPMS for Qt, I still do not trust them.
| Right now I am conducting compilation testing on the qt-2.2.3 package
| from TrollTech. So far, the compilation has failed with gcc 2.95 with
| 3 different option sets. This is grossly unacceptable. They need to test
| their compilations under more situations. You know, "real world" ones.

David,

Let me clarify following, and also make several suggestions:
1) you have problems with KDE, QT, etc. because of RedHat 7.
Please consider *downgrading* to RedHat 6.2 or other distribution.
it will solve a lot of your problems and will save your time. *really*

I have following components installed on my Linux Mandrake 7.2
#rpm -q gcc
gcc-2.95.2-12mdk
#rpm -q glibc
glibc-2.1.3-16mdk

You will also need to enjoy security options & sound following libraries:
openssl-0.9.5a-8mdk
alsa-lib-0.5.9-1mdk

Everything works fine. (I am running KDE2 and QT compiled from sources)

2) it's much better to compile from SRPMS (source RPMs), but not from tar.gz.
./configure options are set automatically in SRPMS, so you will not miss some
necessary option.

3) use i586, not i686 architecture
For some reason, KDE 2.0.1/pre-2.1 were failing to compile for i686 arch. for
me.
Hope it's temporary bug, but it's better to know about it.

4) if you encounter numerless compile errors, may be, its better to wait
until KDE 2.1 is out. It will be ready in a month (appx. mid of January)

Hope this helps.
