Well, in that case... It would be nice if konqueror remembered the
settings for the iconview when it has been replaced with another part.
I mean, choose "sort by type", view a PDF or a text file, go back
to the directory, and it's "sort by name (Case Insensitive)" again.

Actually, I've been looking at this myself. My intial reaction was to 
just compile in a different default, but then the icons are just sorted
by type: within each type they ought to be sorted by name, of course.
Strange, since choosing sort by type manually does sort them correctly.

I checked the code, and I think that upon constructing an iconview, no
configs are being checked, so I tried to create a separate control
module for the icon view, to set some sensible defaults.

 However, that doesn't seem right - Konqueror should remember the settings
for its parts, between sessions, I feel. And I don't know enough about
the KParts mechanism to be able to decide how fundamental that is.
