Hi!

 I have a very similar and probably related problem.

 This applies to every user including root.

 Originally, when I logged in I got the startup sound.  This is no longer the 
case.  I have no sound under KDE2.  I do have sound under GNOME.
I'm running Mandrake 7.2 with a CM8738 chip.    The interesting thing I've 
noticed is that if I run KDE and shutdown, the CMPCI module fails to 
terminate with the message "device or resource busy".  This doesn't happen 
with any other window manager.
