Package: kwin (or unknown)
Version: kdebase-2.0-3
Keywords: window reparenting

Description (very long):

I am using NanoCAD running our local server with X. With KDE 1.1 everything
goes fine, but with KDE 2 pre-releases and KDE 2.0 I can not use this very
important CAD program for me.

NanoCAD is a product of aiss gmbh (http://www.aiss.de/) and I have already
contacted aiss with this problem. I sent following screenshots of NanoCAD
window with KDE 1.1 (nanocad1.jpg) and KDE 2.0 (nanocad2.jpg), which does not
work at all. Normally, NanoCAD menu system should appear like in figure
nanocad1.jpg around xterm window. Using KDE 2 this will not happen (see
nanocad2.jpg) and program is useless. Also some other side-effects occur (see
the text below).

This is my mail to aiss gmbh and I hope this clarify my problem (Tue, 17 Oct 2000):
--------------------------------------------------------
I have used your NanoCAD in our laboratory (Univ. of Joensuu, Finland) for
couple of years. I took part the training when we bought this product. At this
time it was said that NanoCAD was developed under Linux operating system
because of some stability problems with other systems.

This is why I encouraged to ask you a specific problem occured with Linux and
especially with upcoming desktop system KDE 2.0 (still beta release). With
earlier versions of KDE I had no problem using NanoCAD with my Linux PC (our
NanoCAD itself is running at Sun Solaris system). Now, the NanoCAD window
never appear correctly. I include a screenshot (nanocad2.jpg) which hopefully
makes our problem more clear.

Moreover, after this happens ANY LAUNCHED PROGRAM which opens
a window at my X will be "infinitely" small, like a window seen in figure
nanocad2.jpg at upper-left corner just left from "Autostart"-folder.

My question is: if you are familiar with Linux and KDE 2.0 desktop (pre-release)
and if you have encountered the same problem, is there any solution to this
problem?
--------------------------------------------------------

And this is aiss's answer by Mr. Igor Bubel:
--------------------------------------------------------
so far I have no experience with KDE 2.0 yet. I have asked my colleagues at
work, and if someone knows anything, I'll let you know immediately.

It looks like the new KDE is not yet able to do proper reparenting of
windows, a feature of X11 that is not that common but very helpful for
nanoCAD.
--------------------------------------------------------

After this very long description I hope someome could help me to find solution
to the problem. I am sorry, it is impossible to sent you a copy of NanoCAD
program for testing. I would like to use KDE 2 and it's new features, but
because of this problem I am forced to use KDE 1.1.

My KDE is installed using RedHat RPM's on RedHat 6.2.

Sincerely,
Pertti Pääkkönen
